Guard Windows: How to Stay Out of the Way of FOMC, CPI and NFP
Every trader has a story about a trade that was perfectly fine until 8:30 AM. A setup that looked clean for forty minutes, then a jobs number printed and the chart did something no level on the page had predicted. The trade did not fail because the idea was bad. It failed because it was open at the wrong time.
A guard window is a simple fix: a window of time before and after a scheduled release during which you do not enter new trades, or at minimum treat every price as suspect. The point is not that you will never trade around news. The point is that you decided how long to stand aside before the release, while you were calm.
Why the window needs a number
"I'll be careful around CPI" is not a rule. It does not tell you whether that means five minutes or thirty, and it does not survive a fast tape at 8:29. A number does. When the window is written down, breaking it is a visible event you can count later, instead of a feeling you can argue away.
How long to stand aside
Releases are not equal. A routine weekly number moves the market for a few minutes. A rate decision with a press conference reprices the whole day. These are the buffers ohYaaa uses by default, in minutes before and after the scheduled time:
- FOMC rate decision and press conference: 30 before, 90 after
- FOMC minutes: 30 before, 60 after
- Fed Chair speaking: 20 before, 60 after
- Non-farm payrolls, CPI, core PCE, unemployment rate: 30 before, 45 after
- GDP, retail sales, ISM PMIs, JOLTS, consumer sentiment, PPI: 15 before, 30 after
- Jobless claims, ADP: 10 before, 20 after
- Other Fed speakers and Treasury auctions: 10 before, 20 after
- The president speaking: 15 before, 60 after
- Any other scheduled event: 30 before, 30 after
These are defaults, not laws. The shape matters more than the exact figures: the biggest events get the longest tail after, because the second and third moves after a rate decision are often the ones that trap people.
Seeing the window on your day
The Market Intelligence events timeline in ohYaaa shades each guard window around its release, so you can see at a glance that the next clean stretch of the day starts at 10:15, not 9:45. The same events appear on the Calendar day view and on the week view, so you can plan a Wednesday with FOMC on it on Monday.
Two optional nudges help you keep the commitment:
- Guard alerts: turn them on and ohYaaa drops a notice in your bell 15 minutes before a high-impact guard window opens, so you can flatten or tighten up with time to spare.
- Event reminders: a popup at the time of the event or any lead time you pick, from "at the time" up to an hour before.
To be clear about what this is: ohYaaa shows you the window and tells you it is coming. It does not block your trades. The discipline is yours; the journal's job is to make the window impossible to miss, and impossible to forget afterwards.
The review that makes it stick
The value shows up a few weeks later. When you log your trades with entry times, filter to the ones that sit inside a guard window and compare them with the rest. You are looking for two things: did these trades have a different win rate, and, more usefully, were they bigger losers when they lost? Many traders find that window trades are not less frequent winners, but that their average loser is meaningfully larger, which is exactly what a wide spread and a fast tape produce.
If that is what your data says, you do not need willpower. You need the number on your screen and a tag on the trades. Add "Inside guard window" as a mistake or note, and let the dollar cost of that mistake make the argument for you.
The bottom line
Pick the buffers, write them down, and let the calendar warn you. You will still take some trades inside the window. The difference is that each one will be a decision you can see, count, and price, rather than something that just happened to you at 8:30.
ohYaaa is free. Open the app, turn on guard alerts in your Profile, and see what the next release looks like with the window drawn on it.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I avoid trading around FOMC?
A common default is 30 minutes before and up to 90 minutes after the rate decision and press conference. Routine weekly numbers like jobless claims need far less, about 10 before and 20 after.
Does ohYaaa stop me from trading inside a guard window?
No. It shades the window on the events timeline and can alert you 15 minutes before it opens, but the decision stays yours.
