Small habits, nudged at unpredictable times and never while you are in a trade, give your attention somewhere to go. Ask a profitable trader what they actually do all day and the honest answer is: wait. A handful of decent opportunities, long gaps between them. The gaps are where the damage happens. A screen with nothing on it is an invitation to find something, and the something is almost always a trade you would not have taken at 9:35. Willpower is a poor tool for this. "Just don't trade when it's slow" is exactly the instruction that fails at 11:20 after two losses. A better tool is giving your attention a job. ## What a habit is, and is not A habit here is a small, physical or mental action you do while waiting: twenty-five push-ups, a glass of water, a walk to the window, reviewing your watch list, rereading your plan, three slow breaths. It is not a strategy and it is not analysis. Its only function is to break the loop between "nothing is happening" and "I should do something." ## Three principles that make it work 1. **Make it small enough to do mid-session.** If it takes fifteen minutes, you will skip it exactly when you need it. 2. **Make it unpredictable.** A reminder at 10:30 every day becomes furniture. Reminders at varying times keep their signal. 3. **Never interrupt a trade.** A nudge while you are in a position, or in the minutes after one, is worse than none. Reminders belong in the gaps only. ## How ohYaaa handles it [Habits](/habits) in ohYaaa are built around those three principles. You list your habits, give each an importance (high, medium, low) and a target count per day, and pick how often you want to be nudged, from "Off" to about eight a day. The scheduler is deliberately conservative. It only suggests something when: - it is a trading day and inside market hours, not in the first 15 minutes after the open and not in the final half hour - you have no open trade and no trade activity in the last 15 minutes - you are not inside a [guard window](/blog/guard-windows-fomc-cpi-nfp) around a major release - today's budget is not used up and enough time has passed since the last nudge Within what is left, the day's times are planned once and spread out, with some randomness, and weighted slightly toward the hours where *your own* history shows more mistakes or losses (it needs at least five trades in an hour before it will call it a trouble hour). Higher-importance habits come up more often and are listed first. When one appears, you can mark it Done or Skip, close it for later, or skip reminders for the rest of the day. What you did is logged per day, and the log sits at the bottom of the Calendar day panel, next to the trades. ## Closing the loop The log is what makes it more than a timer. Coach Alpha, the AI reviewer in your [reports](/ai-reports), compares days where you completed your habits with days where you did not, and tells you whether those days actually went differently. It will say so when the sample is too small to tell. If the days you did your habits really are better, you have your reason to keep them. If they are not, change the habits, not your belief in them. Pick one habit you would actually do. Start there. ## Frequently asked questions ### What are good habits to do between trades? Small, physical or mental actions that take a minute or two: push-ups, water, a walk, a watch-list check, rereading your plan, slow breathing. ### Will reminders interrupt a live trade? No. ohYaaa never shows a habit reminder while a trade is open or within 15 minutes of trade activity. ## Keep reading - [Guard Windows: How to Stay Out of the Way of FOMC, CPI and NFP](/blog/guard-windows-fomc-cpi-nfp) - [Build a Pre-Market Briefing From the Traders You Already Follow](/blog/pre-market-briefing-from-traders-you-follow) - [Write the Plan Before the Trade: How a Daily Trade Plan Gate Works](/blog/write-the-plan-before-the-trade) [← Back to Blog](/blog) ## Start your trading journal today [Create Your Journal — Free](/app) Free forever.
